19: Suspicion (1941)

SUSPICION isn’t a particularly notable film in Hitchcock’s career, yet its quality through anonymity is a testament to Hitchcock’s ability. After the success of Rebecca, which won Best Picture the year previous, Hitchcock again explores a marriage amongst elites with dark secrets. Again, Fontaine is cast as a nervous newlywed, only now she is the rich one, and Cary Grant is the charming and ambitious husband who may have ulterior motives. The film works wonderfully as an amuse bouche to the ultimate in haunted marriages: Roman Polanski’s masterpiece ROSEMARY’S BABY.
